“Diving Officer,” reported the helmsman. “Fairwater planes are on full rise and Maneuvering answers all Ahead Full.”

The stern planesman also pulled back on his control yoke. As the stern planes moved to the rise position, the back end of Lafayette started to move downward which placed a positive angle on the submarine as a whole. By doing this, the hull of the submarine acted like a big flap on an aircraft’s wing which would push the submarine upward.

“Diving Officer,” reported the stern planesman in a deep Texan drawl and a hint of fear. “Stern planes are on full rise. Angle on the boat is coming up to a positive 25 degrees.”
